ITINERARY:
DAY 1: Cusco – Tinki – Upis
We will pick you up at your hotel and depart from Cusco at 5:00 am. in our private vehicle. We will drive along the Trans-Continental Highway that goes to Puerto Maldonado, and, eventually, on into Brazil. After about 6 hours of driving we will arrive at Tinki which is at an elevation of 3800 masl. On the way from Cusco to Tinki, we will pass by many scenic agricultural areas with picturesque landscapes.
At Tinki we will start walking. After a 5-hour hike, we should reach our first campsite at Upis (4200 masl.)
DAY 2: Upis To Jatun Pucaqocha
After an early breakfast, we will say good-bye to Upis and begin an uphill, 2-hour climb. Soon we will reach La Arapa Pass (4850 masl). From the top of the Pass the vista is sure to take your breath away. On this trek through the high country, you will see lots of vizcachas. These critters are distant cousins of rabbits. As we head down the other side of the Pass, you will notice a turquoise green lake, and another amazing red-colored lake called Jatun Pucaqocha. (The English translation of the Quechua term, JATUN PUCAQOCHA, is ‘big red lake’). We will set up our second campsite by the shore of Jatun Pucaqocha.
DAY 3: Jatun Pucaqocha To Uchuy Finaya
On this, the 3rd day of our Ausangate Trek, we will climb over the top of two passes. The first pass is named Apuchata Pass, and it is at an elevation of 4900 masl. The second pass is called Palomani Pass. Palomani Pass is at an elevation of 5200 masl. This will mark the highest point on our trek. The view from here encompasses the back side of Ausangate Mountain, and you will be able to look down along the whole range of mountains off in the distance. It is a vision which you will never forget. Finally, we will arrive at our third campsite at Uchuy Finaya.
DAY 4: Huchuy Finaya To Pacchanta
On our fourth day we have one more pass to cross over. This one is named Q´ampa Pass, and it is at an elevation of 5000 masl. There are a lot of vicuñas that live in this area. So the possibility of observing these rarely seen, wild creatures is pretty good. Viscachas are very found in abundance close to the Pacchanta Hot Spring, and this is where we will set up our final campsite. So you are sure to see Viscachas. Also, you will be astounded by all the birds that like to live up here near the brightly colored lakes, and so close to the sky. For example, check out the Crested Ducks, the Ground Tyrants and the Puna Hawks.
DAY 5: Pacchanta – Tinki – Cusco
After an early breakfast, we will hike mostly downhill for a couple of hours. It will still be morning when we arrive in Tinki. In Tinki we will be able to say ‘adios’ to the wonderful folks who accompanied us on the trek. Then we will jump into our private van and head back to civilization, to the Ancient Capital of vast Incan Empire, Cusco. We’ll be back in Cusco before dark.
